6.2.4 3GPP Release 10 (Enhanced EPC to Support 4G Radio Access Technology LTE Advanced)

The 3GPP Release 10 specifications were completed in the first quarter of 2011 to support International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) Advanced radio access requirements issued by ITU-R [13], enhancing the existing LTE radio access which was renamed to “LTE Advanced” and marketed as 4G. With LTE Advanced the existing services, such as mobile broadband, MMS, and video chat, were enhanced to accommodate higher data rates along with support of new services like HDTV. To cater for enhanced services enabled by LTE Advanced radio technology required EPC to be upgraded as well with enhanced QoS. The basic architecture of Release 8 EPC remained the same for Release 10, but its network functions were enhanced resulting in an evolved EPC. The evolved EPC has been in operation for a long period and is currently deployed worldwide.
